Stewart F. House - Special Contributor The Colony vs. Frisco: A Notre Dame pledge, Grant Blankenship (6-6, 245) anchors one of the area’s stingiest defenses; The Colony (4-0; 1-0) – a decade removed from the school’s last playoff appearance – has allowed 149 yards per game, second to Seagoville among area 4A teams. The slot-T attack from Frisco (3-1; 1-0) will be a challenge, however. Frisco 35, The Colony 31
John F. Rhodes - Special Contributor Rockwall coach Rodney Webb left Mesquite Horn in February, foregoing a shot with a senior-laden squad. He made the playoffs in each of his five seasons at Horn – the school’s only playoff appearances — and might do the same at his new gig. Last week’s 24-20 win against Rockwall-Heath puts Rockwall (3-2; 1-0 in 12-5A) in solid position for its first 5A playoff berth since 2007. The win came at a cost, however, losing star RB Chris Warren to an ACL tear. Mesquite Horn 42, Rockwall 28
Mark M. Hancock - Special Contributor Flower Mound Marcus at Plano: Sophomore TE Kaden Smith – who holds offers from Alabama, Clemson and OU – has 19 catches, 294 yards and five scores for Marcus (1-3), all team highs. Plano (3-1) will be without its starting QB, junior Mitchell Hansen, who cracked a non-weight bearing bone in his leg last week in a 28-7 loss to Hebron. Marcus 21, Plano 20
David Minton - DRC Lake Dallas vs. Trophy Club Byron Nelson: No shock that Lake Dallas (4-0; 1-0 in 5-4A) has one of the area’s top passers; Dagan Haehn leads area Class 4A QBs with 17 TD passes, nine of them to Josh Jackson. The strength of Byron Nelson (3-1; 0-1) is its defense, allowing 98.5 passing yards per game so far this season. Lake Dallas 35, Byron Nelson 27
Steve Hamm - Special Contributor Irving at Hurst L.D. Bell: Euless Trinity transfer RB Antonio Franklin has shined for Irving (3-1; 1-0 in 6-5A), averaging 6.81 yards per carry with eight rushing TDs. Trailing 13-0 in the second quarter against Grapevine, L.D. Bell (3-1; 1-0) reeled off 54 straight points, gaining 638 yards in the win. Hurst L.D. Bell 24, Irving 21
Stan Olszewski - Staff Photographer First Baptist vs. Frisco Legacy Christian: A different player has led Legacy Christian (4-1) in rushing in each of its first five games. The balance hasn’t hurt production, averaging 233.6 rushing yards. First Baptist (4-0) continues to impress, beating 3A Pittsburg, 51-42, with a go-ahead 39-yard TD run by Jaylin Nelson with four minutes remaining. First Baptist 54, Legacy Christian 35
Michael Ainsworth - Staff Photographer Lancaster at Waxahachie: QB Chris Thomas played well for Lancaster (1-3; 0-1 in 15-4A) in a 44-30 loss to Mansfield Legacy, helping his team to a 16-point lead before leaving the game with an injury. Waxahachie (1-2; 0-1) has missed the playoffs only once in 23 seasons (2010). This could end up as a playoff decider. Lancaster 34, Waxahachie 28
Steve Hamm - Special Contributor Red Oak vs. Mansfield Legacy: In last week’s win over Lancaster, RB Kijana Amous had 39 carries for 177 yards and three touchdowns for Legacy (4-0; 1-0 in 15-4A). Red Oak (3-1; 1-0) escaped a shock loss to Mansfield Lake Ridge, 21-20, thanks to a missed extra point late in the fourth quarter. Legacy 42, Red Oak 38
Lincoln vs. Woodrow Wilson: Woodrow (3-1; 1-0 in 12-4A) held Spruce to 56 yards and four first downs in a 29-0 win last week, its second shutout of the season. Twins Erick and Derrick Neal – both UT-Arlington basketball pledges – combined for 258 yards total offense for Lincoln (2-2; 1-0) in a 34-0 shutout over Conrad. Lincoln 30, Woodrow 14
