Crandall, Frisco stars lead comeback win in East/West All-Star Classic football game
BEDFORD – The East/West All-Star Classic football game needed overtime to decide it, with the East winning 31-28 on a 31-yard field goal by Ferris’ Miguel Mendiola on Saturday night at Pennington Field.
The East rallied from a 28-20 fourth quarter deficit to get the win, as Crandall's Austin Pryor hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Frisco’s Jake Battaglia with 41 seconds left in regulation.
Frisco Lone Star’s Michael Bordes then snagged a two-point conversion pass from Duncanville’s Jeremiah Drake to force overtime.
In the overtime, the West squad missed a 32-yard field goal try on its only possession, setting the stage for Mendiola’s winning kick.
The East lead 7-0 early in the first quarter on a 2-yard run by Ferris’s Jay Foster, but saw the West get first and second quarters scores for 14-7 lead
Godley’s Rachel Evans then made history for the West, hitting the extra point after the first score to become the first female kicker to play in a Texas high school All-Star game. She also pushed through her other PAT try late in the third quarter.
The East then pushed the game to 14-14 at the half, on a 5-yard run by Drake with 1:19 left in the opening half.
Keller Timber Creek’s Amon Lindsey scored two second half touchdowns for the West, including a 13-yard run with 9:05 to play for a 28-20 edge.
Bordes provided the other touchdown for the East in the second half, scoring on a 37-yard pass from Battaglia early in the fourth quarter.
