The UIL is set to expand the playoffs once again. The Standing Committee on Athletics approved a proposal which would expand the Class 2A (formerly 1A-Division I) playoffs in all team sports. Pending Legislative Council approval in October, the expansion would take place starting for in 2015-16 school year.
A 2014 survey of Class 1A and 2A superintendents found that they were in favor of expansion in all but six-man football, voting to eliminate the first-round bye for district champions in team sports, 221-172. The proposed amendment, however, would only affect 2A (former 1A Division I) programs.
This growth follows the addition of the fourth playoff team in the then-Class 2A and 3A playoffs in July 2013.
