Baseball roundup: Southlake Carroll completes sweep; Argyle starters come up big against Sanger
Southlake Carroll 6, San Angelo Central 4: Nic Motley homered and Barry Casey was 2-for-3 with three RBIs as Carroll wrapped up a two-game sweep of a Class 5A Region I quarterfinal series.
Kevin Cramer pitched six innings for Carroll (30-4), allowing four runs and striking out eight. Joe Heineman earned the save with one scoreless inning of relief.
San Angelo Central scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but Carroll responded with three runs in the second as Casey and Heineman hit RBI singles. A two-run double by Casey in the third increased Carroll’s lead to 5-2, and Motley led off the fifth with a homer to make it 6-3.
Cleburne 3, Trophy Club Byron Nelson 0: Jacob Martin and Dylan Schneider combined on a three-hit shutout as the state’s No. 1-ranked 4A team won Game 3 to advance to the 4A Region I semifinals.
Martin pitched six innings and allowed two hits. Schneider pitched a scoreless inning to get the save and was 1-for-2 with an RBI. The shutout came a day after Byron Nelson scored 17 runs to win Game 2.
Argyle 6-6, Sanger 3-2: Drew Gooch and Hunter Markwardt combined to allow four runs in two games Saturday as Argyle won the 3A Region II quarterfinal series, two games to one.
In Game 3, Argyle built a 6-0 lead and Markwardt allowed one run while pitching into the sixth inning. Argyle, ranked fourth in the state, advanced to play No. 8 Texarkana Pleasant Grove.
