Softball roundup: Rockwall gets huge pitching performance to tie series; Plano West can't handle The Woodlands

Rockwall 4, Kingwood 2: Junior pitcher Kayla Vandergriff made just her second start of the season and scattered eight hits and didn't issue any walks as Rockwall won Game 2 to tie its best-of-3 5A Region II semifinal series at one win apiece.

Game 3 is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Ridge High School in Round Rock. The winner will play The Woodlands in the regional final.

Rockwall’s Alyssa Henry scored on a single by Bailey Wallace in the bottom of the third, tying the score at 1-1. One inning later, Rockwall took the lead when it took advantage of a pair of errors by Kingwood.

Shelbi Court’s line drive to center field was misplayed, and the Rockwall third baseman reached second base on the error. One batter later, Mallory Taylor’s fly ball to right field was dropped and Court scored from second base.

Rockwall (27-6-1) added to its lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Peyton Mills and Taylor each scored on a two-run double by Hayley Baker that sneaked down the right-field line.

The Woodlands 9, Plano West 3: Nationally ranked The Woodlands got three hits and three RBIs from Kaitlyn Stavinoha as it completed a two-game sweep of Plano West in a 5A Region II semifinal series. Baylor pledge Abby Langkamp improved to 23-0 despite giving up 11 hits while throwing a complete game for The Woodlands (36-3).

Lubbock Coronado 5, Flower Mound 1: North Texas signee Monique Garcia pitched a six-hitter and struck out 12 as Lubbock Coronado beat the state's No. 1-ranked 5A team in Game 1 of a best-of-3 5A Region I semifinal series.

Flower Mound (29-7-1) was shut out until the bottom of the seventh, when it scored on an RBI double by Wichita State pledge Mauri Jamele.

Hallsville 5, North Forney 1: Cassidy Ferrill didn't allow a run after the first inning as Hallsville swept its 4A Region II semifinal series.

Abilene Christian signee Peyton Hedrick gave North Forney (29-6-2) a 1-0 lead with a home run in the top of the first. But Hallsville (37-3) scored four runs in the second.
