Freshman changes momentum, helps Ennis to win over Mesquite Poteet
RED OAK — Freshman Kinsey Skroh delivered a momentum-shifting, bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to help Ennis secure a 10-5 victory over Mesquite Poteet in the first game of the best-of-three Class 4A Region II semifinal series Thursday night at Lady Hawks Field.
In the top of the inning, Poteet scored three to reduce Ennis’ five-run lead to 7-5.
“Both teams can really hit and it was a game of momentum,’’ said Ennis coach Rodney McNeill. “That was a big hit for Kinsey.''
Game 2 is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Red Oak.
Taylor Maliska allowed nine hits and struck out five to earn the win for Ennis (36-5). Sophomore shortstop Michaela Cochran had three hits and drove in three to share offensive honors with Skroh, the catcher.
Pitcher Madison Sadler kept Poteet (24-13) in position for a comeback with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. Aubree Turbeville and Selena Mendoza had two-run doubles for the Lady Pirates. Turbeville staked Poteet to a 2-0 lead by doubling off the left field fence in the first inning.
Ennis equalized in the bottom of the first with a triple by Cochran and a single by Lana Pate driving in the runs.
“I give our girls a lot of credit for coming right back and answering Poteet’s two runs,’’ McNeill said.
A five-run second inning put Ennis firmly in command. Julia Hollingsworth singled with the bases loaded for a 3-2 lead. Cochran followed with a two-run double prompting Poteet coach Joe Huber to bring on Sadler.
A sacrifice fly by Rylie Robertson and Lana Pate’s infield out accounted for the final two runs of the inning.
Maliska worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, but Poteet scored three in the sixth to reduce the Ennis lead to two, 7-5. Starting Poteet pitcher Cassie Vasquez reentered in the sixth and launched a leadoff home run over the left field wall. Mendoza lined a two-run double with two outs after base hits by Peyton Winkfein and Tristan Wells.
Maliska retired the Lady Pirates in order in the seventh.
