Baseball roundup: Flower Mound Marcus piles up hits; Prosper uses long ball to earn victory
CARROLLTON — On a picture-perfect night for baseball, the Flower Mound Marcus offense was in sharp focus. The visiting Marauders piled up 16 hits and rolled past Hebron, 11-5, Thursday in Game 1 of their best-of-3 playoff series.
Game 2 of the Class 5A Region I quarterfinal is at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Marcus.
The Marauders (29-7) had six hits and four runs in the first two innings, and they stretched their lead to 5-1 on Romero Greer’s RBI single in the top of the fourth. Hebron (23-15-1) battled back in the bottom half of the inning when Zach DeLoach’s two-run single cut the lead to 5-3.
But Hebron didn’t stay close for long. Michael Wheeler’s single drove home two runs and knocked DeLoach, Hebron’s starter, out of the game in the fifth. The Marauders’ offense didn’t slow down after that, adding another run in the inning and three more in the sixth to stretch the lead to 11-3.
Marcus pitcher Jack Cushing went the whole way, allowing seven hits while striking out three.
Marcus has won four of five games this season against Hebron. The teams met three times in District 5-5A competition and once in a tournament.
Flower Mound 10, Mansfield 0: Flower Mound scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to run-rule Mansfield in Game 1 of a Class 5A Region I quarterfinal series at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie.
Sean Wymer homered and tripled, scoring two runs and driving in three more. Kyle Johnston gave up three hits and struck out seven in a complete-game effort.
Flower Mound (27-10) will try to wrap up the series at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Grand Prairie.
Plano 11, Rockwall 0: A.J. Liu, Ryan Robertson, Brett Hudspeth and Michael Davis had two hits apiece as Plano run-ruled host Rockwall in Game 1 of a Class 5A Region II quarterfinal series.
Robertson scored three runs while Liu, Davis and Mitchell Hansen each scored twice.
Plano pitcher Kenneth Tabor took care of the rest with six shutout innings, striking out nine and allowing two hits.
Plano (27-10-1) and Rockwall (25-10) will meet for Game 2 at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Plano.
Prosper 8, Highland Park 1: Tyler Webb and Dean Smith hit home runs to help propel visiting Prosper to a Game 1 victory in a Class 4A Region II quarterfinal series.
Webb also doubled, drove in a run and scored twice. Dom Yearego added two singles and two RBIs.
Prosper pitcher Dylan Bowen threw seven strong innings, allowed two hits and struck out six.
Prosper (27-9-1) will host Highland Park (23-13) for Game 2 at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Frisco 5, Frisco Liberty 4: Andrew Miller homered, and four Frisco batters doubled in a narrow victory in Game 1 of a Class 4A Region II quarterfinal series.
Frisco (23-13) scored three runs in the top of the first on a home run by Miller. It held the lead the rest of the game.
Jake Akin and Dylan Queen drove in runs for Liberty (29-8), which will try to even the series at 8 p.m. Friday at Frisco.
Mansfield Legacy 8, Red Oak 3: Cole Hearrean homered and hit two doubles to pace Mansfield Legacy in Game 1 of their 4A Region I quarterfinal series at Midlothian.
Legacy and Red Oak will meet for Game 2 at 7 p.m. Friday.
