TAPPS Softball/Baseball championships: Bishop Lynch brings title back to Dallas
WACO — Rachel Hansen, Elisa Ramirez, Rynn Lochhead and Darrianne Hale made key contributions as Bishop Lynch claimed the TAPPS 5A state softball title with a 10-4 victory over San Antonio Antonian on Saturday at Waco ISD Complex.
Hansen had three hits and three RBIs, as well as two stolen bases. She helped power a five-run third inning with a two-run double as Bishop Lynch jumped out to an 8-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Antonian sliced Bishop Lynch’s lead to 8-4 with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Lynch added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
Ramirez had a double, triple, two RBIs and a run scored, and Lochhead had two hits, scored three runs and added a pair of steals.
Hale pitched a complete game, striking out seven, and chipped in with an RBI single.
“We peaked at the right time,” Bishop Lynch coach Amy Wheeler said. “We believed in ourselves. Everyone contributed.”
Wheeler was pleased with the fast start and that Hale attacked the hitters early on.
“Darrianne really goes after the batters,” Wheeler said. “That is just her style. So proud of the way she pitched, and proud of our entire team.”
It was the third title for Wheeler at Bishop Lynch, having won the championship in 2007 and 2010.
Fort Worth Christian and DeSoto Canterbury lost in TAPPS state finals Saturday. Fort Worth Christian fell, 12-1, to Houston Second Baptist in the 4A title game. Canterbury lost, 8-2, to Lake Jackson Brazos Christian in the 2A-A championship game.
