Baseball, softball playoffs: Allen's walk-off; Rockwall outlasts McKinney Boyd
Allen 3, Sachse 2: Alex McDonald hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Allen the victory in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series.
West Virginia signee Cole Carter pitched a complete game for Allen, allowing seven hits, and he also had an RBI. Tyler Carter was 2-for-3 with a run for Allen, while Austin Dean was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Sachse.
Hebron 8, Midlothian 2: Hebron scored seven runs in the second inning to win Game 1 of a best-of-3 series.
Zach DeLoach pitched five innings for Hebron, allowing five hits and two runs, and Michael Nuestifter threw two scoreless innings. Justin Rath was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Cleburne 2, Denton Guyer 0: Dylan Schneider threw a four-hit shutout and struck out 10 as the state’s second-ranked 4A team won a one-game playoff.
Cleburne’s two second-inning runs were enough to eliminate the Wildcats (16-19) from the playoffs for the second straight season. Guyer’s first two hitters got on base in the bottom of the sixth, but the Wildcats were unable to plate a run.
Coming into the contest, Schneider boasted a 9-1 record and a 0.62 ERA. Cleburne coach Ross Taylor said Schneider is 27-1 now in his high school career.
Guyer's Daulton Horton (9-1) scattered eight hits and pitched a complete game. He kept the Wildcats in the contest after he left runners stranded on second and third base to get Guyer out of the sixth inning.
Rockwall 8, McKinney Boyd 6: Rockwall scored four runs in the sixth inning to win Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 5A Region II quarterfinal series.
Junior Bailey Wallace provided the key hit in the sixth with a two-run single. She then alertly scored the fourth run of the inning by tagging up from third base when Boyd’s catcher had to range all the way to the first-base dugout to catch a foul ball.
Rockwall (25-4-1) was swept in two games in the same round by Boyd (24-5-2) last year. Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Rockwall’s Campbell Field.
Rockwall junior right-hander Emily Cowan relied heavily on a strong defense and got a pair of double plays, including a rare pitcher-to-third-to first double-play. Two runners reached in the bottom of the seventh, but Cowan got the final out on a soft liner to second.
In the sixth inning, Boyd had two hitters reach base, but Cowan made putouts by catching a line drive up the middle and fielding a grounder for another out. Rockwall sophomore shortstop Dani Greenlee had three exceptional putouts with strong throws to first, including turning a double-play off a grounder near second.
Boyd had a six-run third-inning after falling behind 4-0. Boyd started its rally with a hit by Carly Nicklas and kept rolling with a pair of infield hits and a couple of Rockwall errors. A two-run single by senior Jailen Douglas gave Boyd the lead.
Rockwall had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with the help of an illegal pitch call. Rockwall took a 4-0 lead with 3-run top of the third. Greenlee lined a double to left and scored on a wild pitch, and sophomore Shelbi Court added an RBI single to score junior Peyton Mills.
