Plano West girls, Coppell boys look for repeat soccer championships
The Plano West girls and Coppell boys will try to repeat as Class 5A soccer state champions this weekend in Georgetown.
The UIL announced Sunday the state semifinal pairings for the eight local teams headed to Birkelbach Field. Plano West (19-2-4) will face San Antonio Reagan (21-1-3) at 1 p.m. Thursday. Coppell (21-1-2) will face McKinney Boyd (15-4-6) at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Coppell, the top-ranked team in the area, beat Boyd, 5-1, in a non-district game earlier this season.
Both McKinney Boyd and the Hebron girls are making their first trips to the state tournament. Hebron (21-2-2) will face Katy Cinco Ranch (21-1-3) in the tournament opener at 11 a.m. Thursday.
The Class 4A semifinals will take place Friday, beginning with a girls semifinal between Wylie East (23-1-1) and Friendswood (22-4-3). East is making the school’s first trip to state in any sport.
The Trophy Club Byron Nelson boys and girls have both advanced to state and will play back-to-back on Friday. The Byron Nelson girls (22-2-5) will play Austin Vandegrift (17-3-2) at 1 p.m., and the Byron Nelson boys (26-1-2) will play Frisco Wakeland (22-4-3) at 4 p.m.
Wakeland is competing in its first state tournament since winning the 4A title in 2010.
