SMU coach Larry Brown: Julius Randle could be best PF in NBA we've seen in long time
SMU coach Larry Brown had some very high praise for former Plano Prestonwood star and Kentucky standout Julius Randle.
In an interview with SportsDay's Brad Townsend, Brown compared Randle, a star freshman whom most experts project as a top-10 pick in the NBA draft should he leave after just one season, to Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin.
“I think he’s going to be the best power forward to come into our league [the NBA] in a long time,” Brown said, “but with even a better low-post game at the comparable stage.”
Added Brown: “Nobody’s quicker or stronger or has better potential to play the four position in the NBA the way it should be played than Julius Randle.”
Early this season, though, Brown saw that Kentucky coach John Calipari primarily had Randle playing as more of a small forward.
“Cal’s whole thing was ‘We could win every game, but I’m making Julius Randle a three-man because what I do is teach kids and develop kids,’ ” Brown said with a chuckle. “And I had to laugh because look at it now. Where the hell does Julius Randle play? At the end of the day, Julius Randle makes all the big plays on the block.
“Cal’s a guy who could get away with that [expletive] and say stuff that’s so off the wall.”
