Boys basketball player of the week (3/3): Allen's Nick Rutherford
ALLEN’S NICK RUTHERFORD
What he did: Rutherford scored 27 points to lead Allen to a 65-58 win over Humble Atascocita in the Class 5A Region II final, giving the school its first trip to the state tournament. He scored 22 of his points in the second half, when he went 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Rutherford also had a game-high 19 points in Allen’s regional semifinal win over Spring Dekaney and four points in the regional quarterfinals against Garland Lakeview.
Who is he? A 6-3 junior guard.
The stats: Rutherford is averaging 11.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game this season.
He said it: “It still hasn’t hit me yet. I don’t really know how to react, but it feels good. I’m still not believing that we’re going to state yet.”
Coach said it: “I’ve coached pretty good defensive players. He’s hands down the best on-the-ball defender I’ve ever coached. He’s just got quick hands. He’s got a long reach and wingspan. I haven’t measured but I bet his wingspan is probably about that of a 6-7 kid.” — Jeff McCullough
Did you know? Still with a year to go in high school, Rutherford has drawn interest from Miami, Wake Forest, Iowa, Nebraska and others. ... Allen plays Converse Judson in the state semifinals at 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
