UIL releases statement on controversial Argyle-Celina conclusion

The UIL released an official statement in response to the final seconds of the controversial Class 3A Region II final Saturday between Argyle and Celina.

Here's the statement from the UIL:

The call made by the officials at the end of the Argyle vs. Celina girls basketball 3A regional championship final was a judgment call. According to section 1204 (q) of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules, a protest based on a game or contest official's decision will not be considered.

Once the game is over UIL rules do not allow any type of protest based on an officials judgment or decision.

The crew that worked the game came from the Temple chapter of the THSBOA. Lawrence Wren, who is listed as the chapter's local rules interpreter, declined to comment. He referred all inquiries to the UIL.

One veteran Texas basketball official, who has logged more than 30 years as a ref in the state, tells me "it was the worst ending to a basketball gave I've ever seen in my many years of officiating."

A UIL spokesperson said the UIL is not taking any action against the Temple chapter.
