Girls basketball player of the week (2/24): Duncanville's Ariel Atkins
GIRLS DUNCANVILLE’S ARIEL ATKINS
What she did: Atkins scored in double figures in all three games last week to help lead Duncanville to the state tournament. She scored 13 points against South Grand Prairie on Tuesday, then scored a game-high 32 points on Friday against Arlington Bowie — doubling the next highest scorer in the game — and capped the week off with 16 points in the regional final against Hurst L.D. Bell on Saturday.
Who is she? A 5-11 senior guard.
The stats: Atkins is averaging 17.6 points, six rebounds and four assists per game this season.
She said it: “I try not to put [my high school career] all together because every team and every year is different.”
Coach said it: “She hadn’t shot well the previous three games [before Friday] and she spent a lot of extra time working on her shooting. … She shot an unbelievably high percentage. She was 13-of-15 on 2s and 2-of-2 on 3s and 3-of-3 on free throws.” —Cathy Self-Morgan
