Carroll-Bowie, Plano West-Richardson among notable girls basketball quarterfinal matchups
Things get serious now in the girls basketball postseason.
Almost all of the teams remaining are area- and state-ranked, providing some high profile matchups to look forward to this week.
A few thoughts on the upcoming quarterfinals:
How about Arlington ISD? Three of the eight remaining teams in the 5A Region I bracket come from the district. The state's No. 4 team, Arlington Bowie, is no surprise. It beat Keller Fossil Ridge and El Paso Coronado to set up its matchup with No. 7 Southlake Carroll. Bowie beat Carroll, 67-53, when the two teams met at a Colleyville tournament in November. District foes Arlington Martin and Arlington Lamar will meet on the other side of the bracket. Lamar eked past El Paso Franklin, 44-43, in an area playoff, and Martin edged El Paso Bel Aire, 56-48. Naturally, Lamar and Martin split their regular season meetings.
5A Region I is still loaded: Four of the eight teams remaining in the region are top-10 teams in the state - No. 1 Duncanville, No. 3 Flower Mound Marcus, No. 4 Arlington Bowie and No. 7 Southlake Carroll. Duncanville, it's worth noting, has already beaten all those teams this season. South Grand Prairie, which got beaten soundly twice by Duncanville in 7-5A matchups, is the biggest surprise of the group. SGP took fourth in District 7-5A and has beaten 8-5A champion Killeen Ellison and 5-5A runner up Flower Mound to set up a third meeting with Duncanville. And don't forget about the matchup between Hurst L.D. Bell and Flower Mound Marcus. L.D. Bell can't be taken lightly after its 11-point win against Mansfield Timberview.
Who will emerge from 5A Region II: While Duncanville stands as the team to beat in Region I, the Region II field is a lot tougher to call. Plano West and Skyline both made the regional tournament in Waco last season, but they'll be tested Tuesday. West will face Richardson, which shared the 9-5A title with Skyline. And Skyline will face Plano, which has a number of quality wins this season - including one against Plano West. Among the quality out-of-area teams in the region are No. 13 Cedar Ridge, No. 15 Pflugerville and No. 20 Round Rock Stony Point.
Can't go wrong in 4A Region II: There isn't a bad game in the bunch. The bottom of the bracket features four of the area's best teams. Area No. 1 McKinney North will face area No. 8 Arlington Seguin, and area No. 2 Frisco Liberty will play area No. 4 West Mesquite. Not much separates these four teams and all enter the quarterfinals with similarly impressive resumes. At the top of the bracket are Frisco Centennial and The Colony, which has been tearing it up behind freshman phenom Jade Williams. Mansfield Lake Ridge, in just the school's second year of existence, beat Sherman and 16-4A champion Tyler to reach the quarterfinals for the second year in a row.
