Basketball roundup: Liberty, Seguin girls advance; Prime Prep boys to play Kimball
New Orleans signee Kayla Mundy scored 20 points as Frisco Liberty avenged a loss in last season’s regional final by beating Lincoln, 54-41, in a Class 4A second-round playoff game Thursday.
Liberty (26-3), ranked fifth in the state, advanced to play No. 24 West Mesquite in a 4A Region II quarterfinal. Lincoln, last year’s 4A state runner-up, finished 20-9.
Liberty began the fourth quarter with a 36-32 lead but closed with an 18-9 run. New Mexico State signee Alisha Washington, who led area 4A players in scoring at 22.6 points per game in the regular season, scored 13 for Lincoln.
In other area-round girls games:
West Mesquite 59, Woodrow Wilson 37: Jazmyne Walker scored 19 as West Mesquite won its 11th straight game. West Mesquite (26-5) dominated the first half, taking a 36-16 lead into halftime.
Arlington Seguin 63, Texarkana Texas High 55 (OT): Seguin outscored Texas High, 9-1, in overtime and advanced to a 4A Region II quarterfinal.
Alarie Mayze and Laurynn McGowen each scored 25 points for Seguin (24-9), the state’s 14th-ranked team. Seguin will next play third-ranked McKinney North or Red Oak.
Plano West 47, Mesquite 34: Plano West opened with a 15-3 run, and the state’s 11th-ranked team advanced to the 5A Region II quarterfinals to play Richardson or Rowlett. Natalie Chou led Plano West (25-5) with 12 points.
Southlake Carroll 56, Midland 42: Jacksonville State signee Gretchen Morrison scored 17 points, and Colorado pledge Kennedy Leonard added 15 as Carroll (29-4) moved on to play Arlington Bowie or El Paso Coronado in 5A Region I. Carroll led just 36-32 after three quarters.
Frisco Lone Star 42, Melissa 34: Zoie Miller scored 15 as Lone Star advanced in 3A.
Fifteen months after withdrawing from the UIL, Prime Prep Academy will finally play a Dallas ISD opponent.
Prime Prep (19-5) will face Kimball (19-6) at 6 p.m. Saturday in the final game of the Metroplex Challenge High School Showcase at South Grand Prairie. The game will feature SMU signee Emmanuel Mudiay and star sophomore Terrance Ferguson from Prime Prep, and three-star senior forward D’Angelo Allen and junior guard Jawun Evans from Kimball.
Apart from Prime Prep, the other seven teams participating in the quadrupleheader are doing so as a warm-up to next week’s UIL playoffs.
At 1 p.m., Class 3A Wilmer-Hutchins (15-11) will play Class 5A Rockwall-Heath (18-8), which made the playoffs for the first time in school history. Houston Bellaire (18-7) and Rockwall (16-11) will face off at 2:30, followed by Lancaster (26-4) — ranked No. 2 in the state in 4A — and Irving MacArthur (20-7) at 4 p.m.
