Former Denton Ryan (and Prosper) star Mario Edwards Jr. has big night for national champions Florida State
As good as a football player might be in high school, there are no guarantees about how his skills will translate at the college level. But when I watched Mario Edwards Jr. during his junior and senior years at Denton Ryan, he seemed about as close to the sure thing as you could find.
He was big, fast, strong and dominant. Edwards, who as a freshman was a starter for Prosper's 3A Division I state champions in 2008, was considered by many to be the top high school defensive end in the country in the fall of 2011.
Fast forward to Monday night …
It was fun to watch Edwards on the biggest stage of college football. Last year, he was the only true freshman to start a game on defense for Florida State. And in the 34-31 win over Auburn, the sophomore had six tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. Edwards looked like the guy who was the SportsDay HS Defensive Player of the Year in 2011.
Here's Edwards' bio from Florida State.
