Stony Point surprises Cedar Hill, Aledo cruises at Mansfield Spring Creek Barbeque Invitational

MANSFIELD - Alarming game: Cedar Hill's bid to win the tournament for a second straight year ended with a 53-43 second-round loss to Round Rock Stony Point (18-4), the state's 21st-ranked 5A team.

During the third quarter of the game at Mansfield High School, a fire alarm went off for several minutes, but the game kept going. The alarm was said to have been triggered by construction going on at the school.

"I've been doing this a long time - 15 years. This is the first time it's ever happened during a game," Stony Point coach Keith Allen said. "But at least it wasn't a surprise. It happened in the game before us, so we had an idea it might happen."

Aledo rallies: Aledo, ranked second in the state in 4A, trailed 11th-ranked Mansfield Summit by 12 late in the first half in a second-round game. But led by 6-4 post player Justis Szczepanski-Beavers, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Aledo (15-1) rallied for a 40-38 win.

A free throw by Megan Wood with 2:33 left gave Aledo the lead for good at 37-36, and Breann Forbes added two free throws with 42.5 seconds left to extend the lead to 39-36. A jumper by Keanna Kelly got Summit within 39-38, but Texas pledge Alyssa Dry made a free throw with 3.5 seconds left to put Aledo ahead by two, and Summit's shot at the buzzer was off the mark.

Bowie wins top-10 battle: Arlington Bowie rallied from a 12-point third-quarter deficit to defeat Canyon, 48-47, and advance to the quarterfinals. Bowie (14-1), ranked sixth in the state in 5A, trailed 39-27 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter before going on a 12-0 run.

Canyon (14-4), the state's fifth-ranked 4A team, grabbed a 47-46 lead on a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left. But Jazmine Holman's basket with 24 seconds left gave Bowie a 48-47 lead, and Nicole Iloanya blocked a Canyon shot with three seconds left to preserve the win.

Scoring barrage: North Crowley's Ja'Carria Ferrell scored 30 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter and overtime, in a 58-54 victory against Garland Lakeview in a consolation game. The 30 points was 10 short of the tournament's single-game scoring record that was set in 2008 by Cibolo Steele's Meighan Simmons, who now plays for the University of Tennessee.
