As the top-ranked team in the 5A rankings since the preseason, Allen is now the favorite in Saturday's Class 5A Division I championship game. But let's think back to 2010, when Euless Trinity was undefeated, No. 1 in the state and favored to win the 5A Division I title.
What happened?
The Trojans lost to Pearland, the school that Allen will face Saturday.
The most memorable play in the Pearland-Trinity game, and quite possibly the decisive one, was a trick play.
Midway through the third quarter, Pearland quarterback Trey Anderson took a shotgun snap on second down from his own 46-yard line. The entire Pearland offense stood motionless, as if a penalty had stopped play.
But wide receiver Samuel Ukwuachu streaked down the field against a frozen Trinity defense. Anderson hit Ukwuachu in stride for a 54-yard score, putting Pearland ahead, 21-10.
Trinity rallied and had a chance to put together a winning drive in the final minutes, but Pearland's defense made the big final stop. Pearland won, 28-24.
