Say what?!? Fans react to new UIL reclassification

Following the UIL's release of classification enrollment cutoffs, some fans are slightly miffed by the impending realignment.

The biggest shocker of the new cutoff is that Highland Park will be moved up a classification. The catch is that HP is the school closest to the cutoff number. Fans sounded off on the enrollment numbers after Matt Wixon's blog post this morning through the comments section and on Twitter and here are some of the top responses.

What do you think?

"1A: 104.9 and below." How many of those small country schools have .9 of a student?

There will still be big and small divisions within 5A and 6A. The only thing really changing is that 6-man football is now called 1A, so every other class moves up. No changes to big/small school in the larger classes. The big news here is HP finally moves back up to the biggest classification.

Can [Highland Park] compete in that classification? That classification is going to be really stout and being one of the smaller schools in that classification in the DFW area may be bad thing for them.

The folks at the UIL continue to prove they don't live in reality, continuing with a classification system that worked well up until about 1980 or so. And I'm sure they'll continue to make districts up where some kids have to travel five or six hours one-way to a ballgame on a school night. It's hard to believe these people can't do any better than this. I could take a group of ten smart high school kids and come up with a better system in about an hour.

@mattwixon @sportsdayhs just wait. When smoke clears [Highland Park] will be 5a. See this act before.

You know there are other schools in the metroplex besides Highland Park, right?

Randell Weatherall

I'm sure he mentioned it because Highland Park has been the biggest 4A school for years. The running joke has been that lower limit for 5A had been Highland Park's attendance +1.

Highland Park will be the smallest school in whatever 6A district they end up in, so, if they make the football playoffs, they will always by in division 2.
