Dallas ISD schools will not opt up; Carter, Pinkston, Lincoln will 'drop' to Class 4A

Dallas ISD athletic director Jeff Johnson confirmed Monday that three DISD programs will be dropping in classification at the next alignment.

Current 4A teams Carter, Pinkston and Lincoln will "drop" to the newly-labeled Class 4A (currently 3A) for the 2014-16 alignment.

Lincoln, which opted up to 4A - well short of the 4A cutoff at last alignment, will essentially fall two classifications in football, slated to be a 4A Division II team along with Roosevelt and Madison. Madison, with 469 students, just missed the cutoff to be a 3A (currently 2A) school by five students. Carter, Pinkston and Wilmer-Hutchins will play in 4A Division I.

Johnson said that the district had discussions about opting Lincoln, Madison and Roosevelt into Division I to create a DISD-only 4A DI district, but decided against it.

It will be interesting to see what the UIL will do with the remaining DISD schools in 5A (currently 4A). Instead of two eight-team districts like in the 2012-14 alignment, DISD will have only 13 schools in 5A, meaning there's a chance that out-of-district schools could be added.
