The UIL's new concept of area track meets weren't universally loved in their first year of operation, with some schools complaining about the added cost of another meet while others ran into injuries and accidents during the meets.
A recommendation by the UIL Legislative Council's athletic subcommittee might reduce the number of those meets in the coming years.
A proposal by West Orange-Cove CISD superintendent James Colbert passed its first hurdle, asking for a tweak in how two districts come to agreement on the newly implemented concept.
Currently, it takes only a majority of schools from one of the two competing districts to mandate that an area meet occur. For example, if 7-5A voted against an area meet by a 8-0 vote, but 8-5A (its partner district) voted 5-3 in favor of a meet, it would occur, despite more than 2-to-1 vote against it.
If this rule change is voted into effect on Monday and signed by the Texas Education commissioner, a majority of all the schools in both districts combined will need to approve the area meet.
UIL administrators were supportive of Colbert's proposal. But not all track coaches agreed.
