Allen back at the top of 5A, Argyle climbs to No. 2 in 3A on Corbett Smith's AP ballot
I admit it. I have absolutely no idea whom to put at the top of the Class 5A rankings in my Associated Press ballot.
Allen moves back to the No. 1 spot, after I watched them pick apart a very good Coppell team. The offensive and defensive units both looked impeccable on Friday night, and there's not a deeper team in the state.
But, in moving Allen up, that means I move DeSoto down - after they dropped a 50-0 shutout on a decent South Grand Prairie team. Desmon White accounted for a billion yards of total offense in the win, and he's probably the front runner for the SportsDay HS offensive player of the year award at this point in the season.
And Katy? Don't get me started. They've allowed three points or fewer in four of the five games. All I know is that among the three, there's likely two state champs. All are deserving of first-place votes.
My favorite classification to watch this season - Class 3A - had some shake-ups this week. Last week's No. 1 Carthage was unceremoniously dumped, 63-39, by a ranked 4A team, Whitehouse. Carthage led by three scores in the second half, but gave up 43 unanswered points to Whitehouse and Texas Tech QB pledge Patrick Mahomes. Navasota was bounced from the ranks of the unbeaten by my dad's alma mater, Fairfield, 44-24. Navasota entered the game on a 20-game winning streak, and having not allowed an offensive touchdown all season. Fairfield (5-0) forced six turnovers in the win.
Those losses made some room for Argyle to vault up to No. 2 on my ballot. Any stumble by Gilmer in the coming weeks, and Argyle will slide up again (assuming they don't struggle at the start of district play; 9-3A district mates Celina and Frisco Lone Star are still undefeated, and Carrollton Ranchview is off to a surprising 4-1 start).
And until Jerrod Heard shows me otherwise, I'm keeping Guyer at the top of my 4A poll. I was the only one in the state to have the No. 1 last week.
