The Cowboys' opponent this week is the St. Louis Rams, who feature former Wylie running back Chris Givens at receiver. Givens, now in his second year in the NFL, has caught seven passes in the first two games of the season for a 18.9 yard average.
Things have worked out well for Givens, who struggled with injuries at Wylie but was a star when healthy. He played at Wake Forest, and when he left to join the Demon Deacons, another future Wake Forest player was becoming a star at Wylie.
That player remains one of the most dominant high school linemen I've ever seen.
Nikita Whitlock.
Undersized for the line in college, Whitlock (5-11, 250) is still doing quite well playing nose tackle at Wake Forest. Through three games, the senior has 16 tackles, three sacks, five tackles for loss and has forced a fumble and blocked a kick. He's on the watch list for the 2013 Bednarik Award, which is given annually to the College Defensive Player of the Year.
At Wylie, the way Whitlock could bull-rush opponents was incredible. He was so powerfully built, he was almost unstoppable.
Pretty nice guy, too, it seemed. He came into our SportsDay office to shoot the Defensive Player of the Year video and I enjoyed talking with him. You can find Nikita on Twitter @TrillDeac50.
