Plano East-Flower Mound Marcus matchup should offer view down the road
I'll be at the DeSoto-Cedar Hill game on Friday night, but I'll be keeping an eye on what's happening in the matchup of Plano East and Flower Mound Marcus. I think it's one of the most interesting games of the week.
Entering the season, I would've picked Marcus as about a touchdown favorite over Plano East in this Friday's game at Kimbrough Stadium. Marcus looked tough up front and was returning a lot of key pieces, including QB Cole Erwin, who had a good sophomore season but lost his junior season to a torn ACL.
Now Erwin, poor guy, is out again with a torn ACL (more in this story about injuries). Marcus has lost two straight, but QB Taylor Gibbs played pretty well last week, completing 16 of 25 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. Marcus' problem was that it couldn't run the ball against the tough D of defending 4A Division I champ Denton Guyer.
This game against Plano East - along with next week's against Plano - will help reveal how well Marcus can recover from the injury to one of its leaders.
As for Plano East …
It was hard to make a solid prediction for the Panthers before the season. They didn't make the playoffs last year and lost a lot of offensive firepower, but new coach Randy Jackson led a pretty miraculous turnaround at Mesquite Poteet three years ago.
Sure enough, Plano East is 3-0. The Panthers are averaging 500 yards of offense per game, QB Miles Thompson has thrown for seven TDs with only one pick, and four East WRs have at least 10 catches: Anthony Maiorello, Denim Sansom, Malik Simmons and Shawn Franks. Plano East's D is allowing only 13 points per game.
The Panthers haven't played a big-time opponent yet, but Marcus could be a real litmus test for East's road ahead.
My colleague Corbett Smith picks Marcus to win in a squeaker. I'll go the other way and take Plano East by a field goal.
