Plano schools are 7-1, but big tests loom before district play

Plano, Plano West and Plano East are a combined 7-1 to open the 2013 season, an impressive start for the Collin County trio.

Fans will find out a lot more about these teams in the final weeks of non-district action, which will pose unique challenges to each squad.

Plano, which owns shutout wins against Lewisville and Irving MacArthur, will face Garland Naaman Forest this weekend before meeting Hebron and Flower Mound Marcus. Plano's back-to-back shutouts is a first since 1986, when Plano won the 5A state championship.

"We've got two really good non-district opponents coming up," East coach Randy Jackson said. "I really like how our schedule worked out. Marcus is the best team we'll have played this year. They're going to be a big challenge for us up front."

Plano West lost its season opener against Flower Mound Marcus without standout running back Soso Jamabo. The junior returned for West's victories against Lake Highlands and South Garland.

West will have an interesting meeting with Mesquite (2-1) this weekend before finishing non-district play against Flower Mound.

"Plano and Plano West are the real deal for sure this year," said Jackson, who is in his first season at East. "So we're just trying to keep up."
