Corbett Smith: Allen will probably move back to No. 1 next week on my AP football ballot
(or alternately headlined, "How I justified jumping the unbeaten, defending 5A champs … and how Allen will probably move back up to No. 1 next week")
Allen has been outstanding all season. There's little doubt that it is one of the elite programs - if not THE - in the state at the moment. If I were going to pick a state champion in Class 5A Division I, I'd probably pick them at this point in the season.
That said, for the first time all season, Allen doesn't sit atop my Associated Press ballot.
What DeSoto did on Saturday to Euless Trinity, one of the state's most storied programs, can only be described as amazing: 54 first-half points, 599 yards, 33 first downs. DeSoto pulled many of its starters off the field after the first series of the second half - against Euless Trinity!
I know that Allen has beaten two very talented teams I still have ranked in my top 10: Southlake Carroll and Cedar Hill. I know Allen beat DeSoto heads-up in the playoffs last year, doing so quite handily, 51-36. And, I'd venture to guess that within a few weeks, Allen will be back at the top of my 5A rankings (If DeSoto pulls off a big win over Cedar Hill, it likely keeps the top spot next week; Allen can impress with two non-district games over the next two weeks against quality opponents: Hebron and Coppell).
But, for one week at least, DeSoto should demand the state's attention, respect and reverence.
Here's my ballot:
Class 5A 1. DeSoto 2. Allen 3. Katy 4. Houston Lamar 5. SA Madison 6. Cedar Hill 7. Southlake Carroll 8. Coppell 9. Cibolo Steele 10. Galena Park North Shore
