Potent running game helps North Mesquite start strong
North Mesquite hasn't been in the playoffs since 2007, but the Stallions are off to a nice start with wins over Rowlett (36-27) and Arlington Sam Houston (49-24). This week North Mesquite plays Garland Lakeview in search of its first 3-0 start since …
Actually, it was just two years ago. North Mesquite started the 2011 season 3-0 but then slid to a 5-5 finish as it battled through a tough district.
North Mesquite will be battling another tough district this season, with 12-5A loaded with competitive teams. But North Mesquite has a shot with the productive running tandem of seniors Ta'Varius Luke and Corey Hunt.
Through two games, each of the RBs is averaging more than 200 yards per game.
Luke has rushed 28 times for 422 yards and two touchdowns, and Corey Hunt has rushed 44 times for 401 yards and six touchdowns. Together, they're averaging 11.4 yards per rush.
North Mesquite, averaging 448 yards rushing per game, is the only team in the Dallas area that is rushing for more than 400 yards per game.
