Week One 4A roundup: Lovejoy QB Sells passes for 411 yards in win; Seagoville runs wild against Western Hills

Lovejoy 62, Frisco Heritage 42

LOVEJOY — Bowman Sells threw for 411 yards and three touchdowns to lead Lovejoy to a 62-42 win over Frisco Heritage on Friday night at Lovejoy Stadium.

Lovejoy also had big games from running back Hunter Pfaff, who rushed 12 times for 99 yards and one touchdown while also catching four passes for 74 yards, and Daniel Sefcik, who rushed nine times for 88 yards and three touchdowns.

Frisco Heritage was led by quarterback Malik Walker, who threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing nine times for 121 yards and a touchdown. Sean Jones rushed 22 times for 96 yards and a touchdown.

Frisco Centennial 45, Denison 27

FRISCO — Frisco Centennial grabbed an early 24-0 lead and cruised to victory.

Centennial quarterback Kelly Cordova, a converted wide receiver, threw two touchdown passes to DJ Jackson, and running backs Tapiwa Mudehwe and Kamari Burnett each ran for two touchdowns.

Mudehwe scored on a 73-yard run in the fourth quarter to put the game away. He finished with 127 rushing yards.

Jackson intercepted a Denison pass at the 2-yard line to stop a scoring drive and end the first half.

Running back Denard Whitfield led Denison with 174 rushing yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Chance Rogers finished with a pair of touchdown passes.

Ennis 43, Burleson Centennial 14

ENNIS — Ennis utilized a balanced offensive attack to cruise past Burleson Centennial at Lion Memorial Stadium.

Ennis, which racked up 376 yards, jumped to a 21-0 lead. Burleson Centennial scored late in the first half to cut the lead to 21-7 on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Brady Allen to Curtis Amos. Ennis ended any hopes of a comeback by scoring two touchdowns in the first 5:23 of the third quarter to put the game out of reach at 36-7.

Running back Terence Williams led Ennis with 75 rushing yards on nine carries and added 35 receiving yards. Williams scored two touchdowns.

Quarterback Devin Smith was 10-of-15 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns to go with 33 rushing yards and one score.

Running back DeMarcus Williams led Burleson Centennial with 183 yards on 34 carries.

Red Oak 23, Wylie East 22

RED OAK — Red Oak kicker Andy Santoyo hit a 40-yard field goal with four seconds left.

Red Oak took its first lead with three minutes left in the game when quarterback Logan Thompson hit Deonte Williams for an eight-yard touchdown pass and a 20-19 lead. Thompson led Red Oak with 102 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, in addition to passing for 110 yards.

Wylie East answered with 13-play drive that ended in Braden Shoemake’s 30-yard field goal with 51 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing drive, on fourth-and-13, Thompson hit Garrett Davis for a 32-yard pass down the sideline to set up Santoyo’s winning kick.

Wylie East jumped to a lead on the first play of the game, when Thompson’s pitch hit running back D.J. Augustus in the shoulder pad and was caught midair by Wylie East’s Nico Pierson, who returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

Later in the first quarter, another Thompson pitch was fumbled, and Wylie East’s Malik Dean returned it for another defensive score.

Wylie East was led by Kevon Mack with 122 rushing yards.

Forney 21, Royse City 12

ROYSE CITY — Forney rattled off 21 unanswered points against Royse City to earn a come-from-behind win at Royse City ISD Stadium.

Royse City drove deep into Forney territory four times in the first half, but an opportunistic Forney defense forced two turnovers, holding Royse City to just 12 points. Forney connected on two quick scoring drives in the second quarter, highlighted by a 61-yard reverse touchdown pass from Luke Skipper to David Burnett, to take a 14-12 lead into halftime.

Running back A.J. Atnip led the way for Forney, rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Quarterback Jackson Watts kept the game close for Royse City, passing for 213 yards and a touchdown, while adding 62 yards on the ground.

Seagoville 61, Fort Worth Western Hills 7

SEAGOVILLE — Datavian Bush took the opening kickoff 90 yards for the first score as Seagoville routed Western Hills. Anthony Alexander returned a fumble 57 yards shortly after that for the second score of the game.

Seagoville’s offense then got going as running back Traevon Payne rushed for over 100 first half yards, and scored on a 48 yard run. Payne finished with 159 yards on 7 carries. Seagoville as a team rushed for a total of 368 yards on 25 carries.

Western Hills was led by running back Carlton Hudgins who rushed for 129 yards on 19 carries. Western Hills only score came in the third quarter on a 3 yard run by Ronnie Hall.

Adamson 19, Thomas Jefferson 12

WILMER — Senior running back Damarcus Kelly rushed for 205 yards on 26 carries and scored the go-ahead touchdown midway through the 3rd quarter, as Adamson rallied past Thomas Jefferson 19-12 at Wilmer-Hutchins field.

Kelly’s 1-yard run with 4:40 left in the 3rd quarter made it 13-12. Adamson (1-0) added an insurance touchdown in the 4th quarter, a 2-yard Carlos Gomez score.

Thomas Jefferson (0-1) exploded for big plays in the first half, as Domingo Dahn raced 90 yards for a kickoff return score and later scored on a 25 yard pass from quarterback Kendrick Bright to give T.J. a 12-6 halftime lead.

Adamson’s defense, however, limited Thomas Jefferson to only 41 yards in offense in the second half to secure the victory.

Kimball 33, Madison 3

Kimball used a dominant defense and a few big pass plays to beat Madison 33-3 at Pleasant Grove Stadium.

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Ross threw a 28-yard touchdown to Tyron Caraway in the first quarter, and the two connected on an 81-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.

Dadrian Hancock scored in the first quarter after Alvin Bagby scampered 52 yards to the 1.

Marcus Rowe intercepted a Madison pass late in the second quarter, and then he hauled in a 44-yard pass from Ladarryl Blair on the next play, juggling it a few times as he went to the ground at the 10.

Antoine Stephens ran it in from there to give Kimball a 24-3 at the half. Ricardo Zuniga kicked two field goals for Kimball.

Madison running back Trey Gardener finished with 99 yards rushing on 22 carries. But Kimball’s front four dropped Madison ball carriers for a loss on numerous plays. Madison quarterbacks finished 3 of 15 for 47 yards and two interceptions. Kimball’s Ross finished 11 of 14 for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Carrollton Creekview 50, Saginaw 19

SAGINAW — Justice Ogueri gained 126 yards rushing with four touchdowns on 26 carries as Carrollton Creekview (2-0) ran away from Saginaw (0-2) for a 50-19 win at Rough Rider Stadium.

Jaylen King returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown to put Saginaw on the scoreboard. Creekview immediately answered on the ensuing kickoff when Jamal Jones scored on an 80-yard return. King added touchdown runs covering 39 yards and 2 yards to give Saginaw a 19-14 lead after one quarter.

Ogueri finished off a 67-yard scoring drive for Creekview with a 40-yard touchdown run with 9:37 remaining in the second quarter. Saginaw moved to the Creekview 13 on the next series, but a blocked field goal resulted in Jones’ 91 yard return to the Saginaw 17. The play set up David Blough’s 8 yard touchdown pass to Griffin Lazor to put Creekview up 29-19 at the half.

Creekview put the game out of reach behind Oqueri’s 2 touchdown runs in the third quarter. Eddie Cecena finished off the scoring with a 76-yard touchdown dash in the final minute of play.
