Football turnaround potential at Plano East, Flower Mound Marcus, Rockwall and The Colony

The biggest one-season turnaround I can think of over the last 10 years involved Mesquite Poteet in 2010. Poteet was coming off back-to-back 1-9 seasons, and then …

Whoosh. Taken up on what coach Randy Jackson called a "magic carpet ride."

Poteet made it all the way to the 4A Division II state semifinals, where it lost to eventual champ Aledo. That season was Jackson's first at Poteet. He's now in his first season at Plano East, so expectations will be high for the Panthers.

And maybe a little unrealistic, although Jackson takes over a Plano East program that has a won a lot more games than Poteet was winning before 2010. Plano East was 5-4 last year and missed the playoffs. For the Panthers, getting back to the playoffs would be a nice ride, even if not magic-carpet level.

Here are some other teams that could have big positive win swings this year:

Flower Mound Marcus

The Marauders are coming off an injury-plagued 4-7 season. With the return of senior quarterback Cole Erwin, who missed last season with an ACL tear, Marcus will be a contender in District 5-5A. If it stays healthy, of course.

Rockwall

The Yellow Jackets were 3-7 last season. They have junior RB Chris Warren, who gives new coach Rodney Webb (from Mesquite Horn) something to build around on offense.

The Colony

The Colony, which was 4-6 last year, hasn't been to the playoffs since 2002. DE Grant Blankenship (Notre Dame commit) will be a force on defense. The Colony also returns RB Bryan Hammond, who rushed 233 times for 1,555 yards last season.
