All hail the start of the high school football season
The start of the football season is here. The high temperature in the Dallas area today?
It's expected to be around the same on Friday. Maybe a degree cooler Saturday. The depth of teams will certainly be tested this weekend.
A lot will be tested this weekend. And there will be a lot of weaknesses exposed because, as almost every coach will say, there's not enough time to practice everything before Zero Week.
Or at least practice it enough.
"It just goes by really fast when you get back in the fall," Allen coach Tom Westerberg said this week.
For writers, too. But not the players. Good riddance to the drudgery of practice, practice, practice, no game.
The Allen-Carroll game is one of the highlights of this week, but there are many other excellent matchups. I'm looking forward to Cedar Hill and Denton Guyer tonight.
Even the best teams will be a little sloppy this week. The heat will have something to do with that, as players can lose focus as they wither in the second half. Lack of repetition means teams will lack some polish. Special teams won't always be special. I expect several games will be decided by a special teams breakdown.
Shaking off the rust and getting into rhythm, the first week can be a little awkward for teams. Sometimes they might look a little confused and out of place, like Robin Thicke next to Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Awards. He looked like a dad dressed as a hipster who accidentally walked into the wrong club.
(Full disclosure: I don't actually even know what channel MTV is anymore, but it's hard to have missed that scene on the Internet. Yeesh.)
OK, back to football. The game will be a little rough around the edges, but it's still great that high school football is back.
It's been a long wait, but I'm sure the season won't disappoint. Kicking off in 3, 2, 1 …
