Arlington Martin coach Bob Wager excited after (almost) four good practices
The first four days of practice have been good ones for Arlington Martin, which is hoping to dethrone Arlington Bowie in District 3-5A.
"We've had three and nine tenths great days," he said. "We were having a great time, and then fatigue interrupted our ability to concentrate and then practice wasn't nearly as fun."
"But we used it as a teaching opportunity."
Coaches are getting a lot of teaching opportunities this week as they prepare teams for the season, which will open with a handful of games two weeks from tonight. For teams that started practicing on Monday, the first day of contact is on Friday.
Martin opens the season against DeSoto on Fri. Aug. 30 and plays Skyline and South Grand Prairie the following two weeks. It opens the district season against Arlington, another team with 3-5A title hopes.
Practice wasn't as fun when fatigue set in, Wager said. But it's difficult to find a coach who enjoys his job more than Wager.
"If you really, really love all that is high school football, where else would you coach?" said Wager, who is from New York but is now in his 17th season as a head football coach in Texas. "It's the hotbed of high school football in the country."
