South Oak Cliff's Fonzale Davis commits to North Texas

This is from Brett Vito of the Denton Record-Chronicle:

North Texas' Talon Talent camp paid immediate dividends on Thursday when Fonzale Davis committed to the Mean Green.

Davis, a wide receiver from South Oak Cliff, attended UNT's camp for its top senior prospects and decided to play for the Mean Green.

"I liked the surroundings and their team is like a family," Davis said. "It's like my school in terms of what they do offensively."

Davis (5-11, 181) caught 43 passes for 777 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. He was also offered scholarships by Colorado State, Colorado, New Mexico, New Mexico State and Iowa State. He was a first-team All-District 11-4A selection as a junior last season.

Davis participated in UNT's satellite camp in Duncanville and will also be at Friday Night Lights to cap the week. The event is UNT's largest camp of the summer, one that is open to high school players from across the state.

UNT's camp on Thursday was added to the Mean Green's summer slate in the last few weeks to give the Mean Green's coaches a chance to take a closer look at some of its top targets, and to give them a chance to get a feel for UNT's program.

UNT cornerbacks coach Ryan Walters recruited Davis, who said he is set on going to UNT, but will likely take visits to a few more schools.

What Davis saw at UNT made a big enough impression for him to commit and finish the recruiting process, one he said he wanted to complete before the beginning of the season. UNT safety Marcus Trice visited with Davis during Thursday's camp and helped convince him to commit to play for the Mean Green.

"I liked the new stadium," Davis said. "It's impressive."

UNT is hoping the venue will make an impression on a host of other players who were either at tonight's camp or will be there tomorrow.

Several top prospects were at the event tonight, including Mesquite linebacker Jalen Montgomery.
