Did UCLA offer 8th-grade Southlake QB a scholarship? Carroll football coach unaware; national reports conflict

ESPN reported Wednesday about a Southlake eighth grader who received a scholarship offer from UCLA, but that story may have been premature.

Lindell Stone, an eighth grader at Dawson Middle School in Southlake, is a 6-2, 190-pound quarterback. He told ESPN he was "grateful" to receive an offer from such a prestigious school.

On Thursday, Rivals columnist Rob Cassidy reported that UCLA had made no contact with Stone or his family.

SportsDay reached out to Southlake Carroll coach Hal Wasson on Thursday, and the veteran coach said he'd heard nothing about Stone's offer. He said he hadn't been contacted by UCLA coaches regarding the young football player.

It would be unusual for a player to receive a scholarship offer without the college coaches making contact with his high school coaches.

A message left for Stone's father was not immediately returned.
