Prosper hits five home runs to propel it past Highland Park, into area round
UNIVERSITY PARK — Prosper hit five home runs in a 13-2 run-rule victory over Highland Park on Saturday in the third game of the Class 4A bi-district best-of-3 series.
Prosper set up the decisive game by winning Game 2 earlier Saturday, 2-1. Highland Park used its ace, Oklahoma State signee Matt Wilson, to win Game 1, 4-0, on Friday.
Prosper junior second baseman Tyler Webb hit two homers with a steady wind blowing to left field at Scotland Yard, but it was a three-run home run by senior Zach Kubala to right field that gave Prosper a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of Game 3.
“It was a 1-0 count, and I got a fastball middle-in,” Kubala said. “Normally I’m more of an oppo[site]-field hitter, but I was able to turn on this. It’s been a transition [moving up to Class 4A from 3A], and it seemed like we’re going against an ace every game. But we’re starting to catch up to it at the right time.”
Prosper (17-15) plays Bryan Adams in the area round.
In Game 3, Prosper catcher Aaron Maxey hit a leadoff homer down the left-field line. First baseman Lance Brooks hit a two-run double for a 3-0 lead in the first to set up Kubala’s momentum-shifting homer to right. Webb hit a solo home run in the second inning and added a three-run homer in the third.
Highland Park (19-15) took the top seed in District 10-4A after getting off to a 5-11 start. Highland Park had won its last 10 games before Prosper won Game 2 of the series behind the two-hit pitching of TCU signee Brandon Gilson.
Gilson struck out nine and gave up a sixth-inning home run to sophomore shortstop Jon Skidmore. That was Highland Park’s first hit and only earned run in the final two games, in which Highland Park had three hits over 12 innings. Prosper senior right-hander Jace Vines didn’t allow an earned run in Game 3 and had five strikeouts.
