Powers Aledo, Denton Guyer finally meet in playoffs

Division I area round: Denton Guyer vs. Aledo, 2 p.m. Friday at Justin Northwest

Two perennial powers finally meet in the middle. Denton Guyer, the 2010 Class 5A Division II state runner-up, dropped to 4A this season. Aledo, the 4A Division II state champion the last three years, moved up to Division I this season.

The two schools will meet in an actual game for the first time. The past two years, they have faced each other in preseason scrimmages.

Guyer’s only losses this season came to 5A playoff teams Cedar Hill and Colleyville Heritage in the first two games of the season. Aledo’s sole loss came to Stephenville in Week 1. From Week 2 on, Guyer and Aledo have combined to go 18-0, with an average margin of victory of 40.3 points.

Denton Guyer: QB Jerrod Heard averages 9 yards per carry to lead Guyer’s vaunted rushing attack. He’s totaled 1,247 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground to go with 1,392 yards and 10 touchdowns through the air. When Heard does pass, WR Ellis Jefferson is his favorite target. Jefferson, orally committed to Arizona State, has 30 receptions for 394 yards and five touchdowns.

Aledo: RB Jess Anders has done well filling the hole left when record-setting running back Johnathan Gray left for Texas. Anders has rushed for 1,021 yards and 15 touchdowns. QB Pate Davis has passed for 1,847 yards and 18 touchdowns with only two interceptions. He’s added 624 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.
