Softball playoff roundup: Smithson Valley hangs on to beat Waco Midway, 11-9

AUSTIN — Spring Branch Smithson Valley scored eight runs in the first inning, then held on to beat Waco Midway, 11-9, in a 4A state semifinal.

Smithson Valley (29-6) reached a state final for the first time since winning the 5A title in 2009. It will play Montgomery at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Katie Repole had three RBIs for Smithson Valley, and Megan Hill scored three runs.

Midway (34-9), at state for the third consecutive season, scored three in the top of the first. But Smithson Valley scored eight in the bottom of the first — on only two hits.

Midway scored three runs in the sixth to get within 11-9. But it left two runners on in that inning, then stranded two in the seventh.

Deer Park 13, Northside O'Connor 2 (5): Deer Park scored 10 runs in the fifth and beat last year's state runner-up in five innings in a 5A state semifinal. Deer Park (30-8) will play Klein Collins at 4 p.m. Saturday. Kristen Davenport (14-2) got the win with five scoreless innings of relief and was 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
