One of Dallas area's top junior recruits, Celina lineman Jake Raulerson, verbally commits to Texas
National Signing Day is barely a few days old, but the Texas Longhorns just picked up their first commitment of the 2013 class.
Celina offensive lineman Jake Raulerson announced his decision Friday morning, via a text message:
"The past 8 months have been some of the greatest times in my life! This process has been amazing and I have finally found my home. Ive always had a dream of playing college football and I am proud to say my dreams are coming true!! I have officially committed to the Texas Longhorns!! Hook em!!! TGOD!!"
The 6-5, 250-pound Raulerson chose Texas over 26 other offers, from some of the winningest programs in college football history: Alabama, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida. Raulerson No. 2 on the SportsDay's Top 50 junior list, is as versatile as he is athletic. He's been recruited by Texas at offensive tackle or defensive end. Most recruiting experts think he could end up at any position on the offensive line.
Raulerson said the decision was made early in order to serve as the point man for the 2013 class -- working with fellow recruits to help secure a strong group of signees. Denton Ryan linebacker Alex De La Torre -- the Longhorns first commit from the 2011 class -- served a similar role this year.
"I just wanted to have a chance to recruit my class, to get everyone on board," Raulerson said.
A Florida Gator fan growing up -- his grandfather lived in Gainesville, Fla. -- Raulerson said what made the difference was his relationship with the coaching staff and the current players.
After Raulerson shined at Texas' one-day camp in early June 2011, Texas started recruiting him heavily. He took his last unofficial visit to Austin two weeks ago, on Jan. 20.
Texas generally picks up several commits on its junior days. The first will be on Feb. 12, including Raulerson -- as well as other area recruits Kimball DT Justin Manning, West Mesquite DB Kameron Miles, Lake Highlands OL Kent Perkins, Skyline WR Ra'Shaad Samples, Bishop Dunne OL Ishmael Wilson and DeSoto RB Dontre Wilson, according to Rivals.com.
