Corbett Smith: Predictions for Dallas-area HS football regional finals

Abilene vs. Mansfield Timberview

2 p.m. Saturday, Denton's C.H. Collins Athletic Complex

It’s been a remarkable season for Timberview (11-2), making the longest playoff run for any school in Mansfield history, all while dealing with tragedy. Offensive coordinator Cody McCarty, 29, died of an apparent heart attack on Oct. 16. Timberview has won eight straight after starting 0-2 in District 5-5A, largely on the play of Taylor. The 5-8, 185-pound junior has averaged 106 rushing yards in the winning streak, scoring 11 touchdowns. He’s also thrown for 1,099 yards and seven scores during that span. Taylor’s 25-yard run in the closing seconds of Timberview’s 29-25 win over Abilene Cooper last Saturday was a thing of beauty. He broke three tackles before outrunning the rest of the Cooper defense to the end zone.

Southlake Carroll vs. Arlington Martin

6 p.m. Saturday, SMU's Ford Stadium (KSKY-AM 660, KSKY-FM 92.9, in Dallas)

While it seems like a matchup between a playoff powerhouse and a neophyte, Carroll (13-0) and Martin (12-1) have been models of consistency over the last several seasons. A key difference, oddly enough, is Euless Trinity. Carroll has made the third round or further in 11 of the last 12 seasons, an amazing run unmatched by any area team. However, only once in that run did Carroll play in Class 5A Division I, squeaking by Trinity, 22-21, in the 2006 second round on the way to its third straight state title. Martin has made the 5A Division I playoffs for six straight seasons under coach Bob Wager — the longest run in school history. But five times during that stretch, Martin ran into Trinity. Until last week’s 19-7 win, Martin was 0-4 in the playoffs against Trinity and had been outscored 151-40.
