Region semifinal roundup: Rowlett's season ends on down note
GEORGETOWN — Spring Westfield (10-3) survived a gutsy final drive by Rowlett (8-5) to win the Class 5A Division II Region II semifinal, 33-25.
Rowlett marched down to the Westfield 6-yard line before a pass over the middle on a third-and-goal was intercepted by Julius Lockett.
Entering the fourth quarter, Rowlett led by five points, but penalties helped set up two Westfield touchdowns.
Rowlett’s Jalen Rhodes rushed for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns, his third straight playoff game with more than 100 yards.
Fort Worth Nolan 7, Houston St. Thomas 3
TEMPLE, Texas — Amyn Maloney defended a pass at the goal line with 1:17 remaining, and Nolan’s defense limited Houston St. Thomas to 78 yards of offense to win the TAPPS Division I semifinal at wind-swept Wildcats Stadium.
Nolan (12-1) advances to its seventh state championship game in the last eight seasons and will play Beaumont Kelly (11-3) at noon Saturday in Temple. Houston St. Thomas (8-6) made it to its first state semifinal since 2002.
Trailing 7-3, Houston St. Thomas stopped a fourth-down conversion attempt by Nolan and took over on its 28, facing a 25-35 mph wind with less than four minutes left. St. Thomas completed its only two passes of the day on the drive and reached Nolan’s 30. Nolan’s defense stopped the drive there and took over after Maloney caught up to the fourth-down pass and batted it away.
Nolan scored the game’s only touchdown in the second quarter when Luke Alves went untouched up the middle on a 33-yard run.
