21 points in three minutes push Coppell past Arlington, 38-24
COPPELL — Coppell (2-0) scored 31 straight points, including 21 in just over three minutes spanning the end of the first half and start of the second, en route to a stunning comeback win over Arlington (1-1).
Trailing 24-7 with 2:03 left before halftime, Coppell got a 24-yard touchdown pass from Jake Larson to Gavin McDaniel with 11 seconds left, then parlayed McDaniel’s 67-yard second-half kickoff return and a Brandon Rainbolt interception into two more touchdowns and a 28-24 lead at 8:58 of the third quarter.
Jacob Logan scored both touchdowns on short runs. Coppell socked it away with 10 fourth-quarter points on a 46-yard fumble return by Patrick Hemphill and a 41-yard field goal by Nick Jordan.
Arlington was in control in the first half, scoring on four of its first five drives.
After an overthrown Josh Greer pass was tipped by a defender into the arms of Dontha Robinson for a 76-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Arlington lead just one minute into the game, Coppell went three-and-out and Arlington was on the move again.
Greer completed four straight passes for 75 yards, the longest a 32-yarder to Emilio Vera to give Arlington a first-and-goal at the Coppell two.
Coppell stuffed Tavarreon Dickerson on three straight runs, including what appeared to be a lost fumble. But the officials ruled Dickerson down and Arlington settled for a 22-yard field goal by Garrett Leake and a 10-0 lead.
Coppell pulled to 10-7 on a six-play, 61-yard drive capped by Jake Larson’s 18-yard scoring strike to Jacob Logan.
But three plays later, Dickerson scored the first of his two first-half touchdowns on a 51-yard sweep around the right end, splitting a pair of defenders and outracing the Coppell secondary to the goal line.
Arlington built its lead to 24-7 on Dickerson’s 11-yard score with 2:03 left in the half.
