Poteet advances to state tourney with 4-2 win over Rockwall-Heath
DUNCANVILLE — Chad Young wasn’t on Mesquite Poteet’s varsity last year, his junior season.
Overweight and down on the depth chart behind another left-handed pitcher, coach Bobby Doe left him on the JV until Poteet’s postseason run, which lasted all of one round.
“I must need to have my head checked,” Doe said.
Young has more than made up for lost time in his senior year.
He hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the top of the fifth, then came in as a relief pitcher, holding Rockwall-Heath hitless in the final two innings of a 4-2 Game 3 win in the best-of-3 Class 4A Region II final, sending Poteet (32-6) to the UIL state tournament for the first time since 2007.
Young — a lefty committed to Navarro JC — lost thirty pounds in his off-season, and became more dedicated to improving, Doe said.
“He’s turned the corner better than anyone I’ve ever had, and I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Doe said.
Heath star Jake Thompson tied the game in the bottom of the third, 2-2, on a two-run home run.
But that was the only hiccup for Poteet starter Tyler Franklin. Franklin, who hadn’t pitched in the playoffs until Saturday, scattered six hits in five innings for the win.
Young relieved Franklin after a leadoff double in the sixth and didn’t allow a hit, striking out two for the save. Young (10-0) has allowed only two runs in 282/3 innings, winning each of his playoff starts.
Lubbock Coronado 14, Hurst L.D. Bell 0 (5): In Abilene, pitcher Tyler O’Neill and the Lubbock Coronado offense proved to be too much for Hurst L.D. Bell.
O’Neill struck out five and allowed only three hits as Coronado run-ruled Bell in Game 3 of the Class 5A Region 1 final.
Coronado scored two runs in the first on a homer by shortstop Paxton De La Garza, then pulled away from L.D. Bell (33-11) with a four-run second.WF Rider 21, Burleson 6:
In Abilene, three big innings by Wichita Falls Rider were too much for Burleson in Game 3 of the Class 4A Region I final.
Rider (36-7) scored four runs in the first and fourth and seven more in the seventh to advance to the state tournament. Burleson (26-19) committed six errors.Texarkana Pleasant Grove 5-7, Argyle 3-6:
In Paris, Trey Hart had two doubles and three RBIs as defending state champion Texarkana Pleasant Grove (32-7) rallied past Argyle, 7-6, in Game 3 to win the Class 3A Region II final.
Cody Smith finished 2-for-4 for Argyle (30-13-1), including a two-run triple in the third that garnered a 5-4 lead.
In Game 2, Argyle led 3-0 in the third, but Pleasant Grove scored five unanswered runs to force a third game. Pleasant Grove coach Craig Jones was ejected in the second inning for arguing a balk call.Special Contributors Anthony Green, William Wilkerson and Rich Hilliard contributed to this report.
