Softball roundup: Forney advances to state; Celina downs Lovejoy
FRISCO — Forney’s power proved to be too much for Frisco Centennial on Friday.
Laura Mabary, Krista Williams and Taylor Penn each had three hits as Forney dominated the final five innings of Game 2 and defeated Frisco Centennial, 13-7, to sweep the best-of-3 Class 4A Region II final series and advance to the state tournament.
Centennial started fast. Bethany Broussard led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple. Allie Cranfill followed with a walk. Two batters later Holly VonEhrefried hit an RBI single to score Broussard. Cranfill scored from third on a double steal as VonEhrefried stole second.
Forney sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth inning while scoring six runs, then it added four runs in the sixth to take a 13-3 lead.
Centennial cut the deficit to 13-6 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as Kaytie Proctor hit a three-run homer. Macie Tillery gets the win for the second consecutive night. Tillery pitched a complete game and struck out five.
Forney had eight doubles, two triples and a homer and finished with 18 hits. Centennial finished with 13 hits.
Celina 7, Lovejoy 6: Paige Mongillo’s walk-off, two-out RBI single to left scored Shelby Carter in the bottom of the seventh as Celina completed a two-game sweep of the Class 3A Region II final and advanced to the state tournament after a one-year absence.
Lovejoy tied the score, 6-6, in the top of the seventh on Autumn Keefer’s two-out RBI single that scored Lindy Leggett.
Celina scored five runs in the first with the help of a three-run home run by Taylor Norris. Baylor signee Melissa Schreck was 3-for-4, including a two-run single in the fifth that cut Celina’s lead to 6-5.
Waco Midway 2, Burleson 1: In Waco, Katie Neal tossed a no-hitter to lead defending Class 4A state champion Waco Midway to victory in Game 1 of the best-of-3 4A Region I final series. Neal struck out nine and allowed no walks.
Trailing, 1-0, Midway (36-4) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Monique Miller legged out a bunt single, and Alexis Rowe doubled the next pitch down the left-field line, plating Miller. Rowe scored the go-ahead run on Kelley Schafer’s hard shot to short.
Burleson (32-4) scored its only run in the top of the fifth. Neal hit Samantha Montes with a pitch to lead off the inning, and courtesy runner Alexis Gracia stole second. Gracia scored on Mackenzie Prescher’s bunt in front of the plate.
Game 2 will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Arlington’s Workman Field. A third game, if needed, will follow.
