Plano shocks Keller, scores eight runs in final two innings for 9-8 win
DENTON — Plano scored eight runs in the last two innings — including the game-winner on a bases-loaded error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh — for an improbable 9-8 victory Friday over Keller and a 2-0 win in their best-of-3 Class 5A Region 1 final softball series.
Nationally ranked Plano (39-4) advances to the state championship round next weekend. It’s Plano’s first trip to the state tournament.
Chelsea Sartor scored the winning run from third with two out when Keller could not handle a hard smash to third off the bat of MacKenzie Velasquez.
A hit batsman and one-out singles by Sartor and Kristen Miles loaded the bases before Keller (31-8-1) got a force at home on Erin Lowell’s groundball to get within one out of extra innings.
Plano trailed 8-1 heading for the bottom of the sixth but scored seven runs on seven hits to tie the score. The big hits were a two-run single by Ashley McDowell and a game-tying RBI double by Jill Holub.
Katie Ramsay’s three-run homer in a six-run fourth staked Keller to a 7-1 lead. Ramsay also drove Autumn Suydam home from third with a groundout in the seventh, stretching the Keller lead before Plano’s big rally.
