Southlake Carroll ace strikes out 12 in 7-1 rout of Mansfield Legacy
SOUTHLAKE — When John Curtiss took the mound in Game 1 of the area round of the Class 5A Region I playoffs, everyone — even his opponent, Mansfield Legacy — expected something special.
Instead of Legacy putting its ace, Tejay Antone, on the mound to face Curtiss, coach David Walden chose to push back Antone’s start, instead playing him at first base.
Curtiss, a Texas signee, didn’t disappoint, striking out 12 in a 7-1 win.
“We always pitch to our umpires,” Curtiss said — with a prompt from Southlake Carroll head coach Larry Hughes. “And he had a generous zone. It’s pretty easy to do your job when you have seven runs on the board.”
With a stiff wind blowing out to left field, Southlake Carroll took advantage, hitting two home runs over the left-field fence.
Kyle Bailey, a Clemson signee and the Game 2 starter, opened the scoring in the second, with a towering solo home run.
Stephen Tanksley broke the game open in the fourth with a grand slam. Legacy starter Connor Smith had fooled Tanksley with changeups in his first at-bat, eventually forcing him into hitting into an inning-ending double play. Tanksley was sitting on a changeup in his next at-bat, and golfed a shot high into the wind.
“The wind helped me out a lot right there,” Tanksley said.
Plano 4, South Grand Prairie 2: Tripp Cecil struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh for a save, as Plano held on in Game 1 of the Region I area round series. Plano scratched out runs in each of the first four innings, including a home run by Ryan Thomas in the third, to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Plano turned a triple play to get out of the inning.
Colleyville Heritage 11, Keller 5: All but one of the Colleyville Heritage’s batters reached by a hit or a walk in a Game 1 win in the Region I area round series. Colleyville Heritage senior Joe Kearns went 2-for-4 with seven RBIs, hitting two home runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning.
Rowlett 5, Mesquite 1: Brett Bynum pitched a complete game one-hitter, striking out six as Rowlett won the first game of a three-game series in the Region II area round. Mesquite’s only hit was a lead-off home run by Bre’ Kimbell. Joseph Gary went 2-for-3 for Rowlett, with a two-run home run and a double.
McKinney Boyd 7, Temple 1: Michael Ricchi allowed one earned run and struck out six in 61/3 innings, as Boyd took Game 1 of a three-game series in the Region II area round. Russell Williams went 3-for-4, with two RBIs and a run scored for Boyd.
Highland Park 11, North Dallas 0: Matt Wilson held North Dallas to two hits over six innings, as Highland Park won Game 1 of the Region II area round series. Jake Howeth hit a three-run home run, and Chris McDade had a home run and three RBIs. Highland Park scored six runs in the sixth inning to end the game.
Lovejoy 13, Sanger 3: Lovejoy scored six runs in the third inning to advance to the Region II quarterfinal round. Lovejoy, which leads area Class 3A teams in home runs with 52, had home runs from Tanner DeVinny, Jackson Luce, and Jace Melby. Lovejoy will face the winner of the Argyle-Prosper three-game series.
