Spring football report: Rare returning experience should excite Highland Park fans
TEAM: Highland Park
HOW THE 2010 SEASON ENDED: Undefeated at the time, Highland Park lost in the third round of the Class 4A playoffs to Mesquite Poteet, 45-21, on Nov. 27 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
KEY RETURNING STARTERS: Six starters return on offense and three on defense. The Scots return quarterback Brady Burgin (6-2, 205), who split time last season with Jake Howeth and passed for almost 2,000 yards and 16 touchdowns. Burgin will benefit from the return of the Scots’ top two receivers in Dalton Stogner (67-1,239 yards, 16 TDs) and William Morris (48-734, 3 TDs). As a junior last season, running back Preston Miller rushed for 912 yards and seven touchdowns on 138 carries. Highland Park returns its starting center, right guard and right tackle from last year’s offensive line. Thomas Perry, Clay Cruz and Bradfield Biggers return along the defensive line. Nick Rose, the team’s talented kicker, returns as well.
BIGGEST QUESTIONS FACING TEAM: Longtime Highland Park coach Randy Allen has to replace eight defensive starters, including the Scots’ entire linebacker corps. Guy Tom Kellogg is expected to compete for a starting outside linebacker position, Allen said. The Scots also have to replace three starters in the secondary, including both cornerbacks.
NOTABLES: Highland Park finished 12-1 last season. … Highland Park also opened the season last year against Everman in the Tom Landry Classic at SMU, winning, 27-21. … Highland Park also hosted Monterrey (Mexico) Tec last season, winning, 56-30. … The Scots will again scrimmage Plano West in the preseason Aug. 19 at Highlander Stadium.
HE SAID IT: “We’re predominantly a senior team each year, so it’s unusual for us to have six or seven guys coming back on offense. That’s really good. Last year, we had one starter on offense and one on defense return and we didn’t know who we would start on the offensive line before our first game.” – Highland Park coach Randy Allen
