Royse City softball finally advances past Corsicana
DUNCANVILLE — Royse City was scheduled to play Forney on Tuesday in the Class 4A Region II quarterfinals. Instead, Royse City had to beat Corsicana on Tuesday just to get to the regional quarterfinals.
The state’s 10th-ranked 4A team did just that, as Kansas signee Alicia Pille pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lead Royse City to a 1-0 win. Royse City got its run in the fourth as Kyla Simmons led off with a double and pinch-runner Haley Molock scored on a wild pitch.
After winning games Thursday and Friday, Royse City thought it had swept Corsicana in a best-of-3 second-round playoff series and had advanced to face Forney. But on Monday, Royse City had to forfeit Friday’s 5-0 Game 2 victory after self-reporting that it had used an ineligible player.
“It was just one of those things that slipped through the cracks,” Royse City coach Michelle Booker said. “We looked at it every way we could, but we had to do the right thing.”
That left the series tied at one win apiece, forcing Tuesday’s third game.
Lovejoy 1, Pilot Point 0: Brooke Puckett homered in the fourth inning as Lovejoy won Game 1 of a best-of-3 Class 3A Region II quarterfinal series. Brittany Lewis pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out six for Lovejoy (26-7). Game 2 is at 7 p.m. Friday at Prosper.
