Southlake Carroll's Kelley Anderson, Highland Park girls doubles teams roll into state tennis finals
AUSTIN — Southlake Carroll’s Kelley Anderson overcame gusting winds and a blistering sun on Monday to advance to the girls 5A final of the UIL tennis state championship. .
Two Highland Park girls doubles teams also advanced to the final in the 4A tournament.
Anderson solved left-hander Catherine Wythe of The Woodlands, 6-1, 7-5 then scorched Isha Gandhi of Fort Bend Clements, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the final Tuesday morning against Mariana Rong of San Antonio O’Connor.
“I was hitting the ball really well in my second match,” Anderson said.
The early morning winds were strong enough to play havoc with the balls tossed for serve.
“Several times I threw the ball up and it just sailed,” said quarterfinals winner Parker McGuiness of McKinney Boyd who defeated Alex Stoupine of Houston Bellaire, 6-0, 6-1, two courts over from Anderson and Wythe.
When the morning cloud cover burnt off the breeze became, hot, dry and harsh. McGuiness lost his second match to Mansfield’s Andrew Korinek, who used a strong serve and solid baseline play to defeat McGuiness, 6-1, 6-1 and advance to the 5A boys final where he will play Tanner Brown of New Braunfels.
All-Highland Park final: In the girls 4A doubles, it’s all Highland Park as two Scots teams played their way into the championship match.
Melanie Marlin and Kristen Adams defeated the Wichita Falls duo of Margaret Saied and Alex Cowsert, 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals then blasted the Montgomery pair of Cori Bloh and Maddie Moore, 6-4, 6-1.
On the other side of the bracket teammates Sarah Cannon and Alin Piranian beat Meredith Wilemon and Amy Gray, also from Wichita Falls, 6-2, 6-4 then had a fierce match with Kaylin Kruseman and Hannah Byrd of Houston Stratford winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 as Marlin and Adams cheered on their teammates.
Wakeland, Pearce mixed doubles teams in 4A final: Yuji Soda and Julianne Jackson of Richardson Pearce advanced to the 4A mixed doubles final after winning their semifinal match over Austin Lake Travis’ Ryan Brown and Jaxon Immler, 6-2, 6-2.
Soda and Jackson will play Chase Plowman and Natalie Miller of Frisco Wakeland on Tuesday for the championship.
Plowman and Miller reached the final with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wichita Falls’ Maggie Ross and Parker Schultz.
HP’s Schober falls in quarterfinal: Highland Park’s Avery Schober fell in his quarterfinal boys singles match, 6-1, 6-1 to Connor Curry of Wichita Falls Rider.
