Lancaster track and field claim both boys and girls Class 4A Region II team titles (full 5A, 4A results included)

LUBBOCK — The Mansfield Timberview girls track team doesn’t leave much anticipation when it wins a track meet.

Timberview won state in 2009 by 45 points. It won last year’s Class 4A Region I meet by 70.5 points.

Even though it moved up to 5A this year, Timberview ran away yet again, winning the 5A Region I meet by 47 points Tuesday at Texas Tech’s Terry and Linda Fuller Track. Timberview finished with 98 points, well ahead of second-place Plano East (51).

“When they do it, they do it big,” coach Cinda Baer said. “But we don’t take any of it for granted, and we had to replace a leg on every single relay team. So we’re real fortunate to have a lot of good runners.”

High School Sports

The latest news, analysis, predictions and more for each season.

Or with:

Timberview got it started by winning the 4x100-meter relay, then junior Kaitlyn Williams won the 800. Williams also finished second in the 400 and was a part of Timberview’s winning 4x400 relay team.

Another standout was senior hurdler Ashley Burris, who won the 300 hurdles in a regional-record time (42.57 seconds) and was on the 4x400 relay.

Local athletes shined in the field events, especially those from Mansfield Legacy.

Senior Kole Knutson won the discus with a throw of 180 feet, 4 inches, the first time he has passed the 180-foot mark. And junior Shelbi Vaughan won the girls shot put with a throw of 46-11, defeating Arlington Martin’s Brea Garrett for the first time this season. Garrett finished second with a throw of 45-6.

Orlene Parris of Arlington, a TCU signee, defended her title in the high jump by clearing 5-10. In the girls pole vault, Justin Northwest freshman Desiree Freier won by clearing 11-9 on her first try.

“I’ve got two older brothers, and neither of them made state as freshmen, so that’s what I’m most excited about,” Freier said. “I’ve finally beat them at something.”

The Mansfield Timberview boys’ 4x100 relay team of Kevin Hickman, Dion Standford, Aldrich Bailey and Josh Stief won with a time of 41.36 seconds. Bailey also won the 400 with a time of 46.53.

Class 4A Region I

ABILENE — Crowley sophomore Neisha Moore did way more than she expected to at the Class 4A Region I track meet.

Oh, she ran her top event — the 300-meter hurdles — and won it in 44.89 seconds. But she was also a last-minute injury substitution on two relays, and her anchor leg in the 4x200 relay moved Crowley from sixth to second to earn the team a trip to the state meet in Austin. The top two finishers in each event qualified for state.

“We didn’t even practice handoffs or anything,” Moore said. “And it was great. It was a great day.”

Arlington Seguin swept the girls relays, winning the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 with five girls.

Sophomores Tiauna Jefferson, Chasmine Dangerfield and Jessica Smith ran on all three, and seniors JaToi Snell and Cierra Jefferson each ran on two. The victories gave Seguin plenty of points to win the team championship.

“We knew we had a chance to do it,” said 4x400 anchor Cierra Jefferson, who also won the 400 meters. “But it’s nothing like actually doing it. This is great. I’ve never felt like this before.”

Fort Worth Wyatt sophomore Ladell Marshall knows one thing — he’s faster than Johnathan Gray.

Marshall edged the star football recruit to win the boys 100 meters in 11.01 seconds. Gray — an Aledo junior rated the No. 1 running back recruit in the country who committed to Texas two weeks ago — ran 11.04.

“Oh, I’ve always been faster,” Marshall said with a laugh. “We grew up playing pee wee football together.”

He glanced over at Gray, who laughed while Marshall talked to a reporter.

“There’s football speed and track speed,” Marshall said. “He’s got football speed, and I’ve got both.”

Class 4A Region II

DENTON — Lancaster used the Class 4A Region II track meet as a tune-up for the state meet by winning both the boys and girls team titles. The Lancaster boys won by 13 points over Wylie, while the girls beat Frisco Centennial by 49 points.

“We are very fortunate, blessed more than anything,” Lancaster boys coach Greg Williams said. “I’m just so happy for them.”

Lancaster’s boys won only one event, the long jump, captured by Devin Field with a winning jump of just over 24 feet. Wylie, on the other hand, won the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

“Wylie’s got a great team,” Williams said. “They’re going to be a contender at the state meet.”

Lancaster’s girls won five events. Taije Jordan took first in two of those, winning in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

Carrollton Newman Smith junior Courtney Okolo, the defending state champion in the 400-meter dash, won her signature event and also prevailed in the 800.

“I have only run the 800 maybe five times this year,” Okolo said. “I guess [my coach] saw I had enough endurance to run the 800. I think I can go to state and do really well there.”

She finished the evening by anchoring Newman Smith's winning team in 4x400 relay.
