Baseball player of the week (4/18): Rowlett's Jordan Zangarine

What he did: Zangarine was one strike away from his first seven-inning no-hitter in Saturday’s 8-0 win over Plano East. But a fastball that he thought was the third strike was called a ball. Two pitches later, he allowed a single down the third-base line. He was pulled after the hit and finished with six strikeouts in 62/3 innings. Offensively, he went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. For the week, he was 6-for-9 with four extra-base hits and six RBIs.

Who is he? A 6-1, 180-pound first baseman and pitcher

The stats: For the season, Zangarine is batting .424, with 16 extra-base hits, 21 RBIs and 19 runs scored. As Rowlett’s No. 3 starter, he’s 5-1, with 36 strikeouts and just seven walks.

He said it: “We were all so amped up. … My teammates were joking at the end of the game, telling me they were never so mad after a win.”

Coach said it: “We don’t elect a team captain, but he’s sort of assumed that role. He’s really come into his own as a senior.” — Paul Carmon

Did you know? Zangarine has committed to Texarkana JC but has interest from the Naval Academy and Dallas Baptist. Rowlett breaks each team huddle with a chant of “WTLG” — win the last game.
